Experimentation is an Integral Part of Artistic Expression

Want to know a secret? I never would have expected myself to create a piece like this. But I love how organic and free it is. I can hardly believe I drew something so imaginative and fun.

This process is so relaxing and wildly creative. I work on these when I need a time out for myself or in the few minutes of down time between other activities.

Each piece is unique to its creator. It's a great way to explore color and line. It will improve your drawing skills and your understanding of the use of color and the medium of watercolor.

And did I mention how fun and rewarding it is? Each piece surprises me and I don't get tired of this play. I think you will agree.

This All Started As A Way to Improve My Drawing Skills

Now I turn to it on those days when I don't have the time or energy to deal with everything that painting entails. This process is an easy, no mess way to stay creative every day, even if it's just a couple minutes.

I'll show you how I create various backgrounds and offer some tips for drawing once they are dry. I make quite a few. Backgrounds can take as little as 3 minutes to apply paint. Of course, you can work on them longer than that.

Once they are dry, I keep the sketchbook they are in close to hand and draw when I can. Listening to music or podcasts, watching TV (sort of), waiting in the car or waiting room, any time you have a few minutes is a great time for Line & Flow.

Experiment with Colors

I'm thrilled with this combination!
I didn't expect purple and silver to be so quietly dynamic.

Experiment With Shape

Squares don't automatically flow off my brush, but they will now. This is geometric and yet still organic and playful.

I find the ladder shape with the root behind it so interesting. The way it repeats in the lower right was unexpected.
